Building Sails since 1980

Custom Sails that are Designed, Tested, and Proudly Handcrafted in The Gorge, USA.
Hurricane Sails is excited to announce the availability of their all new 4-batten wave sail - the Fun Factor. After a year of intense research and development Hurricane is now taking orders.

In the early spring of ’25 Hurricane Sail designer, Douglas Van Zandt, approached Gorge sailing legend Sean Aiken, and asked him to help design Sean’s dream 4-batten wave sail. Working in conjunction with long-time Hurricane team rider, Michael Clemett, the trio set off to design a world class line of sails. Lots of prototypes and many recuts and multiple versions of the initial five sizes ( 3.2, 3.4, 3.7, 4.2, 4.7) are now finally ready to be custom built for customers.

The Fun Factor is the lightest sail Hurricane has ever made. Arguably one of the lightest 4-batten wave sails available anywhere. Lightweight without sacrificing Hurricane’s reputation for durability.

Sailors describe the sails as stunningly light - they feel like a smaller sail, ultra maneuverable, balanced, powerful, controlled, easy to sail, fast, crisp, very reactive with a fast power delivery, and with an exceptionally broad wind range. Sailors come in saying they sail'd longer because they are not getting tired. This all adds to sails that deliver a maximum Fun Factor for the sailor.

The sails are compact with a lower aspect than their Hurricane brethren, the Eldorado. This allowed the sails to be designed around the shortest mast possible.

All Hurricane sails have been built in America. The Fun Factors are custom built in Hurricane's White Salmon Loft.

The Tech - The Fun Factor is constructed with a wide
spaced 6 mil x-ply window and two different custom laminated materials by Dimension-Polyant. These are used above the booms/window in the lighter version and below the booms/window, where abuse happens, in the more durable version. Both have Kevlar fibers in the warp direction with a Spectra X and are laminated clear to add visibility.

The epoxy CNC'd battens are custom made in Hood River by Robachaud Batten Systems.
